chapel
A small, quiet place for prayer and worship.
A chapel is a small room or building used for prayer and worship, usually Christian. Unlike a large church that serves a whole community, a chapel is more intimate and often part of something bigger: a hospital might have a chapel where patients and families can pray, or a university might have a chapel where students attend services. Many castles and grand houses had private chapels where the family could worship without traveling to the village church.
Some chapels stand alone as tiny churches in remote areas. Others are side rooms within larger churches, often dedicated to particular saints or used for small, quiet ceremonies like weddings. You might attend chapel as part of a private school's daily routine, or visit a roadside chapel while hiking in the mountains. The key is that chapels feel personal and peaceful, places where a few people can gather for reflection rather than for massive congregations.
