chimp
A smart African ape closely related to humans.
A chimp (short for chimpanzee) is a highly intelligent ape that lives in the forests and grasslands of central Africa. Chimps are among our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, sharing a very high percentage of their DNA with humans. They live in social groups, use tools to solve problems (like using sticks to fish termites out of mounds), and can learn to communicate using sign language.
Chimps are very strong, with adults possessing great strength despite being smaller in size than most adult humans. They spend their days climbing trees, foraging for fruit and nuts, grooming each other, and playing. Young chimps learn by watching their mothers and other group members, just as human children learn from their parents and teachers.
In the wild, chimps face serious threats from habitat loss and hunting, making conservation efforts critical for their survival. Researchers like Jane Goodall have spent decades studying chimps in their natural habitat, revealing how much they think, feel, and problem-solve in ways that remind us of ourselves.
Sometimes people use chimp as slang to describe someone acting silly or energetic, but this usage can be disrespectful.
