church
A building where Christians gather to worship and pray together.
A church is a building where Christians gather to worship God, pray, and learn about their faith. On Sunday mornings, you'll see families heading to church for services, where they sing hymns, listen to sermons, and spend time with their community. Churches come in many architectural styles: some are simple wooden buildings with a single room, while others are grand cathedrals with soaring towers, stained glass windows, and bells that ring across entire neighborhoods.
The word also refers to the community of believers itself. When someone says “the church helped our family during a difficult time,” they mean the people who belong to the church and their collective actions. Christians sometimes speak of “the Church” (with a capital C) to mean all Christians everywhere, past and present.
Different Christian denominations have their own types of churches. Catholics attend Mass at a Catholic church, Baptists worship at a Baptist church, and so on. Despite their differences, churches serve as places where Christians come together to practice their faith, support each other, and strengthen their relationship with God. Many churches also run food banks, schools, and other programs to help their communities.
