Cinema is the art and business of making movies, or a theater where movies are shown. When people talk about “the cinema,” they might mean the whole world of filmmaking: directors, actors, special effects, storytelling techniques, and everything that goes into creating films. A film critic might write about “modern cinema” or “French cinema,” referring to the movies being made in a particular time or place.

Early pioneers of cinema in the 1890s amazed audiences with simple clips of trains arriving at stations or workers leaving factories, images that might seem boring today but that felt magical when motion pictures were brand new.

Cinema can also mean the movie theater itself, especially in British English. Someone might say “Let's go to the cinema” the way Americans would say “Let's go to the movies.” Either way, cinema represents something special: a darkened room where strangers gather to share stories told through moving images and sound, an experience that has captivated audiences for more than a century.
