civilized
Polite, well-behaved, and organized in how people live.
Civilized describes societies that have developed systems of government, laws, education, and culture that allow many people to live together in an organized way. A civilized society has cities, written language, established rules for settling disputes, and ways to pass knowledge from one generation to the next. Ancient Rome, for example, was a civilized society with roads, aqueducts, courts of law, and libraries.
The word also describes behavior that shows good manners, self-control, and consideration for others. When people settle disagreements through calm discussion rather than fighting, they're being civilized. A civilized conversation means people listen respectfully even when they disagree. At dinner, eating with utensils and saying “please” and “thank you” are civilized behaviors.
Sometimes people use civilized to mean comfortable or refined, as in “Let's have breakfast at a civilized hour” (meaning not too early) or “a civilized cup of tea.”
Being civilized, whether as a society or as individuals, involves recognizing that we're all part of a larger community where our actions affect others. It's about creating order, showing respect, and working together to build something better than any one person could create alone.
