cleverness
The ability to think in smart, quick, and creative ways.
Cleverness is the ability to think quickly, solve problems in smart ways, and find creative solutions that others might miss. A clever person notices patterns, makes unexpected connections, and figures out how to get things done even when the obvious approach won't work.
Cleverness shows up everywhere. A clever student might invent a memory trick to remember all the planets in order. A clever chess player sees a winning move three turns ahead. When you're stuck on a puzzle and suddenly realize you can use the box as part of the solution, that's cleverness at work.
The word carries a hint of admiration mixed with something else. While we appreciate clever solutions, calling someone clever can sometimes suggest they're a bit too focused on showing off or finding shortcuts. A clever answer might be technically correct but miss the spirit of the question.
This double edge appears in phrases like “too clever by half,” meaning someone is so busy being clever that they outsmart themselves.
