clip
To cut something, usually with scissors or similar tools.
The word clip has several meanings:
- To cut something, usually with scissors or shears. A barber clips your hair to trim it shorter. A gardener clips hedges to shape them neatly. When you clip an article from a newspaper, you cut it out to save it. The noun clippers refers to tools designed for cutting: nail clippers, hair clippers, or garden clippers.
- To attach or fasten things together, often with a small metal or plastic device. You might clip papers together with a paper clip, or clip your bike helmet under your chin. A clipboard holds papers in place with a spring clip. When you clip on a name tag or clip a leash to a dog's collar, you're fastening things together temporarily so they can be easily removed later.
- A short piece of video or audio taken from something longer. When you watch a funny clip from a movie online, you're seeing just a brief segment, not the whole film. News programs often show clips from speeches or events. A video clip might last just a few seconds, capturing one interesting moment.
- To move quickly with short, rapid steps. A horse might clip along a trail at a fast pace. If you're walking at a good clip, you're moving briskly and purposefully, covering ground efficiently without running.
