clout
Influence or power that helps you make things happen.
Clout means influence or power, especially the kind that lets you get things done or make things happen. When someone has clout, their opinions matter and their requests get taken seriously. A student council president might have clout with the principal and be able to suggest changes that actually get considered. A famous scientist's recommendations carry more clout than an unknown researcher's, even if they're saying similar things.
Today, when people talk about clout, they usually mean the figurative power to make an impact. A wealthy donor has clout with a charity. A popular kid might have clout in deciding which games everyone plays.
Having clout doesn't automatically make someone right or good. It just means they have the power to influence outcomes. Real clout typically comes from earning respect through achievement, position, or expertise. Someone who uses their influence wisely and fairly builds even more clout over time, while someone who abuses their power can lose it.
