club
An organized group of people who share an activity.
The word club has several meanings:
- An organized group of people who share a common interest or activity. A book club meets regularly to discuss books they've read together. A chess club gives students a place to play and improve their skills. Some clubs are serious and competitive, like debate clubs or robotics clubs. Others exist mainly for fun and friendship, like a craft club or a hiking club. Schools often have dozens of clubs where students can explore hobbies, learn new skills, or just spend time with people who enjoy the same things they do.
- A heavy stick used as a weapon, thicker at one end than the other. Throughout history, warriors carried clubs into battle. A police officer's nightstick is a type of club. In fairy tales and mythology, ogres and cavemen often carry clubs. The word can also be used as a verb: to club something means to hit it with a club or a similar heavy object.
- One of the four suits in a standard deck of playing cards, marked with a black symbol that looks like a three-leaf clover. When you're dealt the seven of clubs, you're holding a card from this suit. The other three suits are hearts, diamonds, and spades.
