cockpit
The front area where a pilot or driver controls a vehicle.
The cockpit is the compartment at the front of an airplane where the pilot sits and controls the aircraft. It's packed with instruments, switches, and displays that help the pilot navigate, communicate with air traffic control, and monitor everything from altitude to fuel levels. In larger planes like commercial jets, the cockpit holds both the pilot and copilot, who work together to fly the plane safely.
Racing cars also have cockpits: the tight space where the driver sits, surrounded by controls and safety equipment.
Modern cockpits look like something from a science fiction movie, with glowing screens and hundreds of buttons. But every instrument serves a purpose: helping pilots make split-second decisions and keep passengers safe. When you hear about pilots in the cockpit preparing for takeoff, they're running through careful checklists, making sure every system works properly before the plane ever leaves the ground.
