collector
A person who gathers and keeps related things as a hobby.
A collector is someone who gathers and keeps objects that share something in common, building a collection over time. Collectors might focus on baseball cards, stamps, rocks, coins, vintage toys, or thousands of other things. What makes someone a collector is deliberately seeking out specific items and caring for them with purpose and attention.
True collectors know their subject deeply. A coin collector can tell you which pennies are rare and why. A rock collector learns to identify different minerals and where they're found. They organize their collections carefully, often displaying items in albums, cases, or on shelves. Serious collectors might trade with other collectors, visit special shops, or travel to find particular pieces they're missing.
The word can also describe someone whose job involves collecting things, like a ticket collector on a train or a tax collector who gathers money owed to the government. But when people simply call someone “a collector,” they usually mean someone who pursues a hobby of gathering related objects they find interesting or valuable.
Some collections become worth serious money over time, but most collectors care more about the hunt for new pieces and the satisfaction of building something complete and meaningful than about making a profit.
