college
A school you attend after high school to earn a degree.
College is a place where people go to continue their education after high school, usually for four years, to earn a degree and prepare for their careers. Students choose a main subject to focus on, called a major, like biology, engineering, English, or computer science. They may live in dorms with other students, attend classes taught by professors, and study much more independently than in high school.
The word can also mean any group organized for a specific purpose. The Electoral College is a group that officially elects the U.S. president. A college of cardinals helps run the Catholic Church. In Britain, some high schools are called colleges, which can cause confusion for American visitors.
Going to college isn't the only path to success. Many people learn valuable skills through trade schools, apprenticeships, military service, or by starting their own businesses right after high school. College works well for careers that require specific degrees, like becoming a doctor, teacher, or scientist. It also gives students time to explore different subjects and figure out what they're passionate about before committing to a career. The choice depends on your goals, interests, and what kind of work excites you most.
