collie
A smart, gentle herding dog with a long nose and coat.
A collie is a type of dog originally bred in Scotland to herd sheep. These intelligent, energetic dogs have long, pointed noses and thick, flowing coats that helped protect them from harsh Scottish weather. The most famous collie is probably Lassie, the heroic dog from books, movies, and television who always seemed to know when someone needed help.
Collies became shepherding dogs because of their remarkable ability to understand commands and work independently. A shepherd might send a collie to gather scattered sheep from distant hills, and the dog would know exactly what to do. They could work all day in tough conditions, running miles across rough terrain while keeping the flock together.
Today, most collies are family pets rather than working farm dogs, but they still have that herding instinct. A collie might try to herd children playing in the backyard, gently nudging them to stay together like a flock of sheep. They're known for being loyal, gentle with children, and eager to please their families.
