colorful
Bright and full of many different colors.
Colorful describes something bright and vivid, full of different colors. A colorful painting might burst with reds, blues, yellows, and greens. A colorful garden in spring displays purple crocuses, yellow daffodils, and pink tulips all at once. Parrots are colorful birds, with brilliant feathers that seem almost too bright to be real.
The word also describes people, stories, or language that are interesting, lively, or unusual. A colorful character isn't necessarily wearing a rainbow shirt: they might be someone with fascinating stories, surprising habits, or an unforgettable personality. Your grandfather might tell colorful tales about his adventures growing up, full of vivid details and memorable moments. When describing a baseball team, you might say it has a colorful history if it includes dramatic comebacks, controversial calls, and legendary players.
Sometimes colorful language is a polite way of saying someone used words that aren't quite appropriate for school or the dinner table. If an adult says someone used “colorful language,” they usually mean the person got a bit too excited and said things they probably shouldn't have.
