comedy
Entertainment that is meant to make people laugh.
Comedy is entertainment meant to make people laugh. A comedy might be a funny movie, a play with silly situations, a stand-up routine where a comedian tells jokes, or a humorous book. The ancient Greeks invented theatrical comedy over 2,000 years ago, creating plays where characters got into ridiculous predicaments and everything worked out happily in the end.
What makes something comedy? Usually it involves exaggeration, surprise, or pointing out life's absurdities. A character might slip on a banana peel, misunderstand what someone said in a hilarious way, or find themselves in an impossible situation like trying to hide a llama in their bedroom. Physical comedy uses funny movements and actions, while verbal comedy relies on clever wordplay and jokes.
Comedy often works by subverting expectations. You think one thing will happen, then something completely different occurs. When a supposedly dignified principal walks confidently into a classroom only to trip over a backpack, that unexpected moment creates laughter.
People also use comedy to describe funny aspects of real life. You might say “a comedy of errors” when describing a day where everything went hilariously wrong, or call someone “a bundle of contradictions” when their actions don't match their words in amusing ways.
