companionship
The warm, happy feeling of spending time with someone.
Companionship is the comfort and pleasure of having someone to spend time with, whether that's a close friend, family member, or even a beloved pet. It's the warm feeling of sharing experiences with someone who enjoys your company as much as you enjoy theirs, creating a sense of connection and belonging.
You experience companionship when you work on a difficult puzzle with your brother, each of you contributing ideas and celebrating together when you finally solve it. You feel it when you walk to school with your best friend every morning, talking about everything and nothing. Even a dog provides companionship, greeting you enthusiastically after school and keeping you company while you read.
Companionship doesn't require constant conversation or entertainment. Sometimes it's sitting quietly with your grandfather while he reads the newspaper and you draw, both of you simply happy to be together.
Long sea voyages, solo expeditions, and lighthouse keeping were all considered difficult partly because of the lack of companionship. Humans are social creatures who thrive on connection with others, which is why companionship matters so deeply to happiness.
