Compliance means following rules, laws, or requests that someone in authority has set. When you're in compliance with school dress code rules, you're wearing what you're supposed to wear. When a building is in compliance with fire safety laws, it has working smoke detectors and proper exits.

A factory must be in compliance with environmental regulations, meaning it can't pollute beyond certain limits. A driver is in compliance with traffic laws when they stop at red lights and obey speed limits.

Compliance is different from agreement. You might think a rule is silly but still follow it because you're required to. That's compliance. A student might find a homework rule pointless but do the work anyway to stay in compliance with a teacher's expectations.

Organizations often have compliance officers whose job is making sure everyone follows important rules. Companies track compliance rates to see how well people are following policies. When something is non-compliant, it means it doesn't meet the required standards.

In most contexts, compliance simply means doing what the rules require, whether you agree with them or not.
