component
A part that helps make up a larger working thing.
A component is one of the parts that makes up something larger. Think of a bicycle: the wheels, chain, pedals, and handlebars are all components that work together to create a functioning bike. Remove one component, and the whole machine stops working properly.
In engineering and science, complex things are built from simpler parts. A computer has many components: the processor, memory, keyboard, and screen. A recipe has components too: the individual ingredients that combine to make the final dish. Even a school project might have several components, like research, writing, and a visual presentation.
Understanding something's components helps you see how it works. When your science teacher asks you to identify the components of a plant cell, she wants you to name the distinct parts (nucleus, cell wall, chloroplasts) that each do specific jobs. When a mechanic talks about car components, he's discussing individual parts that might need repair or replacement.
Notice that component suggests the parts matter individually but also work as a system. A pile of bicycle components isn't a bicycle until they're assembled correctly. That's what makes component different from just saying “part”: it emphasizes that each piece has a role in making the whole thing work.
