comprehend
To fully understand something in a clear, deep way.
To comprehend something means to fully understand it in a deep, complete way. When you comprehend a math problem, you understand why the steps work and could explain them to someone else, beyond just memorizing the procedure. When you comprehend a story, you grasp not only what happened but why characters made their choices and what the author wanted you to feel.
Comprehension goes beyond simple recognition. You might recognize the words in a science textbook, but until you truly comprehend the concept, you can't use that knowledge to solve new problems or answer questions in your own words. Teachers check your comprehension by asking you to explain ideas, apply them to new situations, or make connections between different topics.
When something is difficult to comprehend, it can feel slippery or confusing. But when comprehension clicks into place, suddenly everything makes sense. That satisfying “aha!” moment when a confusing concept finally becomes clear? That's comprehension happening.
