concoct
To invent or create something by cleverly mixing different things.
To concoct means to create something by mixing different ingredients or elements together, often in a clever or inventive way. A chef might concoct a new soup recipe by combining unexpected flavors, or a kid might concoct a wild excuse for why their homework is late, piecing together various creative (if unconvincing) reasons.
The word often suggests a bit of experimentation or imagination in the mixing process. Scientists concoct new medicines by carefully combining chemicals. A group of friends might concoct a plan to surprise someone on their birthday, weaving together different ideas until they have something that works.
While concoct can be used positively for creative recipes or clever plans, it sometimes has a slightly suspicious feel to it. When someone concocts a story, they might be inventing details that aren't quite true. A concoction is whatever gets created through this mixing process: a kitchen concoction might be delicious or disastrous, while a concocted excuse might be elaborate but totally unbelievable.
