considering
Thinking carefully about something before deciding or judging.
Considering means thinking carefully about something before making a decision or forming an opinion. When you're considering whether to join the soccer team or take piano lessons, you're weighing the options in your mind: what would each choice involve, what would you enjoy, what would it cost in time and effort?
The word suggests genuine thought rather than a snap judgment. A student considering different topics for a research project isn't just picking randomly; they're thinking about what interests them, what resources are available, and what they can realistically accomplish. A family considering where to go on vacation might discuss different destinations, compare costs, and think about what each person would enjoy.
You can also use considering to mean “taking into account” or “given the circumstances.” If someone says “You did well on that test, considering you were sick all week,” they mean your performance was good when you factor in the difficulty of studying while ill. When a coach says “We played well, considering our best player was injured,” she's acknowledging a challenge that affected the outcome.
