constituent
A person who is represented by an elected leader.
A constituent is someone who belongs to a group represented by a leader or organization. When you vote for someone to represent your town in the state government, you become their constituent. They're supposed to listen to what you and other constituents need and speak for you in important decisions.
Think of constituents as people who stand together under the same representative. A senator's constituents are all the people who live in their state. A principal's constituents include students, teachers, and parents at the school. Members of Congress often hold town halls where constituents can share their concerns directly.
Constituent can also mean a part that makes up something larger. Water's constituents are hydrogen and oxygen. The constituents of air include nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases. In this sense, constituents are the building blocks or essential ingredients of something more complex.
Politicians talk about “serving their constituents” because those voters have the power to re-elect them or choose someone else. Good representatives stay connected to their constituents, understanding what matters in their communities. When you write to an elected official about an issue you care about, you're acting as an engaged constituent, using your voice in how you're governed.
