contest
A competition where people try to win a prize.
Contest has two main meanings:
- A competition where people try to win by being the best at something. Spelling bees, essay contests, athletic tournaments, and talent shows are all contests. In a contest, participants follow the same rules and compete for a prize, recognition, or simply the satisfaction of winning. The Olympics feature contests in dozens of sports, while your school might hold a science fair contest or art contest.
- To challenge or dispute something you believe is wrong. When a candidate contests an election result, they're arguing that the counting wasn't fair or accurate. If you contest a parking ticket, you're telling the authorities you don't think you deserved it. A lawyer might contest a decision in court, presenting evidence to show why it should be changed.
The second meaning carries a fighting spirit: when you contest something, you're actively pushing back and demanding that others reconsider. Whether you're entering a contest to test your skills or contesting a rule you find unjust, the word suggests standing up and making your case.
