continuously
Without stopping, going on all the time without breaks.
Continuously means happening without stopping or without any breaks in between. When something happens continuously, it keeps going steadily, like a river that flows continuously downstream or a computer server that runs continuously, day and night.
The word describes actions or states that persist without interruption. Rain falling continuously means it never stops, even for a moment. A factory running continuously operates around the clock, with workers on different shifts keeping production going. Your heart beats continuously from the moment you're born, pumping blood without taking breaks.
People often confuse continuously with continually, but there's an important difference. Something that happens continuously never stops, while something that happens continually happens repeatedly but with gaps. A dripping faucet drips continually (drip... drip... drip), with pauses between drops. But a stream of water flows continuously, with no interruption in the flow.
In math and science, continuously has a precise meaning: changing smoothly without any jumps or gaps. A car's speed changes continuously when you gradually press the gas pedal, but a light switch changes states discontinuously, jumping instantly from off to on.
