contortionist
A performer who bends their body into extreme, twisty shapes.
A contortionist is a performer who can bend and twist their body into positions that seem impossible for most people. Contortionists might fold themselves backward until their head touches their feet, squeeze through a tennis racket, or balance their entire body on one hand while bending their legs over their head.
These performers develop their flexibility through years of patient training, often starting when they're young and their bodies are naturally more flexible. You might see contortionists in circuses, variety shows, or street performances. Some famous circus companies, like Cirque du Soleil, feature contortionists who combine their flexibility with acrobatics, dance, and storytelling.
While it looks like magic, contortion is actually a skill that requires dedication, daily practice, and an understanding of how joints and muscles work. Some people are born more flexible than others, but even naturally flexible people need serious training to become contortionists.
You might hear someone jokingly call themselves a contortionist when they have to twist awkwardly to reach something: “I had to be a contortionist to get that toy from under the couch!”
