To convalesce means to recover gradually after an illness or injury. When you convalesce, you're past the worst of being sick, but you're not quite back to your normal self yet. You need rest, care, and time to regain your full strength.
Think of it as the in-between stage: you're not sick enough to stay in bed all day, but you're not strong enough to run around the playground either. A person convalescing from the flu might spend a week reading quietly at home, taking short walks, and going to bed early. Someone convalescing from a broken leg might do gentle exercises while the bone finishes healing.
During convalescence (the noun form), doctors often recommend nutritious food, plenty of sleep, and avoiding strenuous activity. Your body is rebuilding itself, and that takes energy and patience.
In older novels, you might read about characters traveling to the countryside or seaside to convalesce, since fresh air and rest were considered essential for recovery. While modern medicine has changed how we treat illness, the basic principle remains: healing takes time, and convalescing is your body's way of finishing the job.
