convey
To communicate or carry something from one place to another.
To convey means to communicate or transport something from one place or person to another. When you convey information, you're passing it along: a teacher conveys knowledge to students, a reporter conveys news to readers, or you might convey your gratitude by writing a thank-you note. The word emphasizes successfully getting your message across so others understand what you mean.
The word also means to physically transport something. Conveyor belts in factories convey packages from one station to another. Ships convey cargo across oceans. Before modern vehicles, horses and wagons conveyed people and goods along dusty roads.
Sometimes what you convey isn't stated in words at all. Your facial expression might convey disappointment even if you say “I'm fine.” A painting can convey sadness, joy, or mystery through colors and shapes. A composer conveys emotion through music. The key idea is transmission: something moves from one place, person, or state to another, whether that something is a feeling, an idea, or a physical object.
