coolness
A calm, confident style that makes someone or something admired.
Coolness is a quality that makes someone or something seem confident, interesting, and admirable without trying too hard. A person with coolness stays calm under pressure, shows genuine confidence, and doesn't get flustered when things go wrong. When a basketball player sinks a difficult shot and just jogs back down the court like it was no big deal, that's coolness.
Coolness can also describe things: a sleek bicycle design, an ingenious solution to a problem, or a fascinating science experiment. When you say something is “cool,” you're recognizing that it has style, cleverness, or appeal.
Real coolness comes from being comfortable with yourself. The kid who tries desperately to impress everyone rarely seems cool, while someone who pursues their own interests with genuine passion often does. A student who builds elaborate Rube Goldberg machines just because they love engineering has a certain coolness that can't be faked.
The word also refers to moderate coldness, like the coolness of evening air after a hot day, or the coolness of tile under your bare feet.
Interestingly, what seems cool changes with time and place. Your grandparents thought different things were cool than you do, and that's natural: coolness reflects what a particular group values at a particular moment.
