coral snake
A small, brightly colored, very poisonous snake.
A coral snake is a small, brightly colored venomous snake found in the southern United States and in Central and South America. These snakes are famous for their striking pattern of red, yellow, and black bands wrapped around their bodies like colorful rings.
Coral snakes have extremely potent venom, but they're shy, reclusive creatures that would much rather hide than bite. They spend most of their time underground or beneath leaves, hunting smaller snakes and lizards. Their bright colors serve as a warning to predators: “Stay away! I'm dangerous!”
