Corporal means relating to the physical body, as opposed to the mind or spirit. Corporal pain means pain felt in the body rather than emotional hurt.
In the military, a corporal is also a low-ranking officer. This use of the word developed separately from the “body” meaning, even though it is spelled the same way.
