countertop
A flat surface on cabinets used for working or holding things.
A countertop is the flat, horizontal surface that covers the top of kitchen and bathroom cabinets, creating a workspace at a convenient height for preparing food, setting things down, or getting ready in the morning.
In kitchens, countertops provide the main work area where families chop vegetables, mix ingredients, set out groceries, or place hot pots fresh from the stove. In bathrooms, countertops surround the sink and hold toothbrushes, soap dispensers, and other daily essentials.
Countertops come in many different materials. Granite countertops are cut from natural stone and prized for their beauty and durability. Laminate countertops are made from layers of plastic and paper pressed together, offering an affordable option. Marble countertops look elegant but scratch and stain more easily. Some countertops are made from butcher block (thick wood), quartz (engineered stone), or even concrete.
The choice of countertop material matters because different activities demand different properties: bakers want cool marble for rolling dough, while busy families might prefer something nearly indestructible that can handle spills, hot pans, and the occasional dropped jar without getting damaged.
