craftiness
Sneaky cleverness used to trick or outsmart others.
Craftiness is the quality of being clever in a sneaky or calculating way. A crafty person uses intelligence not for straightforward problem-solving but to trick others, bend rules, or gain advantages through deception.
Think of the difference between a clever student who studies hard and figures out difficult problems, versus a crafty student who learns exactly which homework the teacher checks and only completes those assignments. Both are smart, but craftiness involves using that intelligence for shortcuts and manipulation.
In stories, crafty characters often scheme and plot. The fox in Aesop's fables displays craftiness when he tricks other animals. A crafty villain in a movie doesn't use raw power but instead relies on elaborate plans and deception.
Craftiness isn't always terrible. Sometimes people admire “crafty” solutions to tricky situations, like finding a creative workaround to a problem. A crafty negotiator might be praised for getting a good deal. But the word usually carries a negative feeling because it suggests someone is being dishonest or manipulative rather than direct and honorable.
The related word crafty works the same way: “The crafty raccoon figured out how to unlatch the garbage can.” When you hear someone described as crafty, pay attention to whether they're being admired for cleverness or criticized for sneakiness.
