crane
A large machine used to lift and move heavy things.
The word crane has two completely different meanings:
- A large machine used for lifting and moving heavy objects. Construction cranes tower over building sites, using long metal arms and steel cables to hoist steel beams, concrete blocks, and equipment that would be impossible to move by hand. Harbor cranes load and unload massive shipping containers from cargo ships. The biggest cranes can lift hundreds of tons, making them essential for constructing skyscrapers, bridges, and other large structures. Operators sit in cabs high above the ground, carefully controlling the crane's movements.
- A tall wading bird with long legs, a long neck, and a sharp beak. Cranes live near water and are found on every continent except Antarctica. Many species migrate thousands of miles each year. These graceful birds are known for their elaborate courtship dances, where pairs leap, bow, and call to each other. Some cranes, like the whooping crane, nearly went extinct but have been brought back through conservation efforts.
As a verb, to crane means to stretch your neck or body to see something better, like craning your neck to look over a crowd.
