crate
A strong box used to protect and carry things.
A crate is a sturdy box or container, usually made of wood or heavy plastic, designed to hold and protect things during shipping or storage. Unlike a flimsy cardboard box, a crate has a strong frame built to handle rough treatment. Farmers pack apples in wooden crates with slatted sides so air can circulate. Movers use plastic crates that stack neatly in trucks. Pet owners transport dogs and cats in special animal crates with ventilation holes and secure doors.
You might hear someone say they crated their belongings when packing for a move, meaning they packed everything into crates. When archaeologists discover ancient artifacts, they carefully crate them for transport to museums. Musicians crate their instruments to keep them safe on tour.
People also use the word informally for worn-out old things, like calling a beat-up car an “old crate.” But the primary meaning remains a strong, protective container built to keep valuable cargo safe during its journey.
