creature
A living being, usually an animal that seems strange or unusual.
A creature is any living being, but the word is most commonly used to describe animals, especially ones that seem mysterious, unusual, or a bit wild. When you spot a strange creature scurrying through the woods at dusk, you might wonder if it's a raccoon, a possum, or something else entirely. Marine biologists who explore the deep ocean discover bizarre creatures that glow in the dark or have transparent bodies.
The word often carries a sense of wonder or strangeness. In fantasy stories, creatures might include dragons, griffins, or talking trees. In real life, we might call deep-sea fish or rare jungle animals creatures because they seem so alien and fascinating. You probably wouldn't call your pet dog a creature in normal conversation, but you might call the odd beetle you found under a rock a “strange little creature.”
Sometimes people playfully use the word to describe humans, especially when someone is acting in an unusual way. A teacher might affectionately call a particularly energetic student “a curious creature,” or you might describe yourself as “a creature of habit” if you always eat the same breakfast every morning. The word suggests something living and animate, but with a touch of mystery or peculiarity that makes it more interesting than just saying “animal” or “living thing.”
