crow
A large, smart black bird with a loud cawing call.
The word crow has two main meanings:
- A large black bird known for its intelligence and loud “caw-caw” call. Crows are remarkably smart: they use tools, remember human faces, and even hold what look like funerals for dead crows. You'll often see them in groups, searching for food in parks, fields, or even parking lots. Their all-black feathers and distinctive call make them easy to recognize.
- To boast loudly about an achievement, like a rooster crowing at sunrise. When someone crows about winning a game or getting a perfect score, they're announcing their success in a way that feels a bit too proud or showy. You might hear someone say, “There's no need to crow about it,” meaning the person should be more modest. The phrase eat crow means to admit you were wrong after being overly confident, which is especially humbling if you'd been crowing about being right in the first place.
