cud
Partly digested food animals bring back up to chew again.
Cud is partially digested food that certain animals bring back up from their stomachs to chew again. Cows, sheep, goats, and deer are all cud-chewing animals. They swallow their food quickly while grazing, then later, when they're resting, they regurgitate it (bring it back up) and chew it thoroughly before swallowing it again.
This might sound strange, but it's actually a clever adaptation. These animals have special stomachs with multiple chambers that break down tough plant material like grass and hay. The first chewing is quick, just enough to swallow. The second chewing, when they're working on their cud, is slow and thorough, grinding the food into smaller pieces so their bodies can extract all the nutrients.
When you see a cow lying in a field with its jaw moving in slow, rhythmic circles, it's chewing its cud. The phrase “chewing the cud” also means thinking something over carefully and slowly, the way these animals patiently work through their food.
