curry
A spicy sauce-based dish, often with meat or vegetables.
Curry is a dish made with meat, vegetables, or legumes cooked in a spiced sauce, originating from South Asia but now enjoyed worldwide. A typical curry might include chicken or potatoes simmered in a rich sauce flavored with spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and ginger. The sauce can be mild and creamy or intensely spicy, depending on the recipe and regional tradition.
Different countries have developed their own curry styles. Indian curries vary dramatically from region to region: some are fiery hot, others sweet and mild. Thai curries often include coconut milk and fresh herbs like lemongrass. Japanese curry tends to be sweeter and thicker, often served over rice with breaded pork cutlets. British curry houses developed their own versions when immigrants from South Asia brought their cooking traditions to England.
As a verb, curry can also mean to groom a horse by brushing its coat, though this comes from a completely different origin and has nothing to do with the food.
