A dachshund is a small dog breed with a long body, short legs, and a bold personality. These distinctive dogs look a bit like hot dogs on legs, which is why they're often called “wiener dogs.” Their unusual shape wasn't an accident: German hunters bred dachshunds hundreds of years ago specifically to chase badgers and other animals into underground burrows.

Those stubby legs and long body that make dachshunds look comical actually made them perfect for their original job: squeezing into tight tunnels where larger dogs couldn't follow. Despite their small size, dachshunds are surprisingly brave and determined. They come in different coat types (smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired) and can be standard-sized or miniature.

Today, most dachshunds are family pets rather than hunting dogs, but they still have that fearless temperament. A dachshund might confidently challenge a dog five times its size, and they're known for being stubborn during training. They're also loyal, playful companions who often form strong bonds with their families. If you've ever seen a small dog with enormous confidence strutting around on tiny legs, it might well have been a dachshund.
