A dame is a woman, especially an older or important one. In medieval times, a dame was a woman of high social rank, the female equivalent of a knight or lord. Today in Britain, “Dame” is still an official title of honor given to women who've made exceptional contributions to their country, similar to how some men receive the title “Sir.” Dame Judi Dench, the famous actress, earned her title through decades of brilliant performances on stage and screen.

In old-fashioned or playful language, people sometimes call any woman a dame. You might read in an old detective novel about “a mysterious dame in a red coat” or hear someone joke about “a classy dame.” Used this way, the word has a slightly theatrical, vintage feeling to it, like something from an old movie.

Whether referring to a titled British honor or simply to a woman, dame can carry a sense of respect or authority, even when used casually.
