darling
A loving name for someone you care about very much.
Darling is a term of endearment, a sweet word people use for someone they love or care about deeply. Parents might call their children darling, partners use it with each other, and close friends sometimes share it too. When your grandmother says “Hello, darling!” as you walk through her door, she's expressing affection and warmth in a single word.
The word can also describe someone or something that is charming, lovable, or delightful. You might say your new puppy is absolutely darling, or describe a clever little bakery as a darling shop. In this sense, darling suggests something sweet and appealing, though using it this way can sound a bit old-fashioned.
Sometimes people use darling ironically or sarcastically, especially when annoyed. If your brother keeps interrupting while you're trying to read, you might say “Darling, could you please be quiet?” with a tone that means exactly the opposite of affection.
While it might sound formal or outdated in some contexts today, it remains a genuine expression of love and care in families and close relationships.
