date
A specific day on the calendar.
The word date has several meanings:
- A specific day on the calendar. When you write the date at the top of your homework, you might put “October 15, 2024.” Historical events have important dates: the Declaration of Independence is dated July 4, 1776. Something up to date is current and recent, while something out of date is old or no longer useful.
- A social outing, often between two people who like each other. When two people go on a date, they might see a movie together or get ice cream. The word can also be a verb: two people who spend time together in this way are dating.
- A sweet, dark brown fruit that grows on palm trees in hot climates. Dates have been an important food in the Middle East and North Africa for thousands of years. They taste like caramel and are often eaten dried.
When someone asks “What's today's date?” they want to know the calendar day. When your older sister talks about going on a date, she means something completely different.
