deacon
A church helper who serves and cares for people.
A deacon is a person who helps serve in a Christian church, working alongside ministers and priests to support the congregation. Deacons live up to their name by handling practical tasks that keep a church running smoothly.
In many churches, deacons visit sick members, help distribute food to people in need, manage church finances, or assist during religious services. They might organize community meals, maintain the church building, or coordinate volunteers. While ministers focus on preaching and leading worship, deacons often handle the hands-on work of caring for church members and the wider community.
Different Christian traditions treat the role differently. In some churches, being a deacon is a permanent calling. In others, it's a stepping stone toward becoming a priest or minister. Some churches ordain their deacons in special ceremonies, while others simply appoint members to serve in the role.
The earliest deacons in Christian history were chosen to distribute food fairly among widows and people who were poor, freeing up the apostles to focus on teaching. This tradition of practical service continues today: a deacon might coordinate a church food pantry, organize relief efforts after a natural disaster, or simply make sure everyone feels welcomed and cared for when they attend services.
