death
The permanent end of life for a person, animal, or plant.
Death is the permanent end of life. When a living thing dies, its heart stops beating, it stops breathing, and it does not come back to life. Death happens to all living creatures: people, animals, and plants.
Throughout history, people have wondered about death and what it means. Different cultures and religions have different beliefs about what happens after someone dies. Some believe in an afterlife or heaven, others believe people are reborn, and others believe death is simply the end. These beliefs shape how people grieve, remember loved ones, and think about their own lives.
When someone we love dies, we feel grief, a deep sadness mixed with missing them. People often hold funerals or memorial services to honor the person who died and share memories together. Grief is natural and important. It is how many people process loss and begin to heal.
Death also appears in language beyond its literal meaning. A project might face sudden death, meaning an abrupt end. A deathly silence means complete quiet. Something deadly can kill you, but people also use the word casually, like calling a test “deadly difficult.”
