decision
A choice you make after thinking about your options.
A decision is a choice you make after thinking about different options. When you decide between playing outside or reading a book, working on your science project or your book report first, or joining the chess club or the art club, you're making a decision.
Some decisions are quick and easy, like choosing what to wear or what to eat for breakfast. Others require careful thought because they matter more or affect other people. When a coach decides who plays which position, when your parents decide where the family will vacation, or when you decide whether to stand up for a friend who's being teased, those decisions carry more weight.
Making good decisions often means gathering information, thinking about consequences, and sometimes asking for advice. A baseball manager's decision to bring in a relief pitcher might win or lose the game. A scientist's decision to investigate a particular question might lead to an important discovery.
Notice that being decisive means making decisions confidently and without unnecessary delay. Someone who is indecisive struggles to make choices and changes their mind frequently. The ability to make thoughtful decisions and take responsibility for them grows stronger with practice, like any other skill.
