decoration
Something added to make a place or thing look nicer.
A decoration is something added to make a place, object, or person look more attractive or festive. When you hang streamers and balloons for a birthday party, those are decorations. When an artist paints patterns on pottery, that's decoration too.
Sometimes decorations serve no practical purpose: a painting on a wall doesn't hold anything up, but it makes the room more pleasant. Other times, decorated objects work just fine: a plain mug holds coffee as well as a decorated one, but the decorated version brings more joy to your morning.
Decorations often mark special occasions. Cities hang decorations for holidays. Families put up decorations for celebrations. The type of decoration tells you something about the event: red hearts mean Valentine's Day, while orange pumpkins signal Halloween.
The word can also mean an official honor given for achievement. A soldier might receive a military decoration (often called a medal) for bravery. In this sense, the decoration itself becomes meaningful, not just pretty: it represents courage, service, or excellence.
Whether you're decorating a Christmas tree, decorating cookies with frosting, or seeing someone receive a decoration for heroism, the core idea stays the same: adding something special that transforms the ordinary into something more meaningful.
