demagogue
A leader who gains power by stirring emotions and fears.
A demagogue is a political leader who gains power by appealing to people's emotions, fears, and prejudices rather than using reason and honest discussion. A demagogue tells crowds what they want to hear, often blaming problems on particular groups of people and promising simple solutions to complicated issues.
Imagine a student running for class president who says, “The principal is making terrible decisions! Vote for me and I'll make sure homework disappears and pizza gets served every day!” That's a small-scale example of demagoguery: making unrealistic promises and stirring up anger instead of proposing real, workable ideas.
Famous demagogues throughout history have risen to power during times of uncertainty or hardship, when people felt worried and wanted someone to blame.
A demagogue differs from an honest leader because they don't care whether their promises are realistic or their claims are true. They care only about gaining power and loyalty, even if it harms others or weakens a community.
