department
A separate part of an organization that does one kind of work.
A department is a separate section within a larger organization, where people focus on specific types of work. In a store, the toy department sells toys, the clothing department sells clothes, and the electronics department sells computers and phones. Each department handles its own area so customers can find what they need and workers can become experts in their specialty.
Schools have departments too. The English department includes all the English teachers, who work together to plan the curriculum and share ideas about teaching writing and literature. The math department does the same for mathematics.
In government, departments are major divisions that handle different responsibilities. The Department of Education works on school policies, while the Department of Transportation maintains highways and regulates air travel. These departments are so large they employ thousands of people.
A department store is a large retail shop organized into many departments under one roof, each selling different categories of products. You might buy shoes in one department, books in another, and furniture in a third, all without leaving the building.
Companies use departments to organize work efficiently. When everyone in the marketing department focuses on advertising and promotion, and everyone in the shipping department focuses on getting products to customers, the whole company runs more smoothly than if everyone tried to do everything.
