A doctor who treats problems with skin, hair, and nails.
A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in treating skin, hair, and nails.
When you have a stubborn rash, mysterious bumps, or a mole that's changed shape, a dermatologist has the training to figure out what's wrong and how to treat it. They treat everything from acne and eczema to serious conditions like skin cancer. Some dermatologists also help people with hair loss or nail infections.
Becoming a dermatologist takes serious dedication: four years of college, four years of medical school, and then three to four more years of specialized training focused entirely on skin conditions. During this training, they learn to recognize hundreds of different skin problems, often just by looking, since skin can tell a story about what's happening in your body.
Dermatologists use medicines, lasers, surgery, and other treatments. They might freeze off a wart with liquid nitrogen, prescribe a cream for poison ivy, or remove a suspicious mole to test it. Because your skin is your body's largest organ and protects everything inside, keeping it healthy matters more than most people realize.
