despair
A feeling of complete hopelessness that makes you want to quit.
Despair is the feeling of complete hopelessness, when you believe that nothing can get better and there's no point in trying. It goes beyond ordinary sadness or disappointment to a deeper conviction that your situation will never improve. When someone falls into despair, they've lost faith that things can get better.
Imagine a student who has failed several math tests in a row. At first, they might feel frustrated or discouraged. But if they start thinking “I'll never understand this, I'm just terrible at math, why even bother studying?” they're moving toward despair. Despair makes people want to give up entirely.
In stories, a character in despair often needs help from a friend or a sudden change to see possibilities again. In The Lord of the Rings, Sam Gamgee refuses to give in to despair even when things look impossibly dark, which helps Frodo keep going.
Despair is the opposite of hope. While hope says “things might get better if I keep trying,” despair says “nothing matters anymore.” Fortunately, despair isn't permanent. With support, time, or a new perspective, people can climb back out of it and find reasons to keep moving forward.
